First try at High Profile Flies

Post  Charlie G. on 3/18/2013, 6:51 pm

Well I saw a new style called a high profile fly on another site and wanted to give the style a try.
Spoke with Old Man Bob about it and another tier and here's the first 2 I came up with.
Be nice their my first 2 tries at it. But I like the results Very Happy

I'll have to give them the water test to check the profile when wet still.
But should give them a deeper, wider side profile.

Sat down and tied another to get the hang of this style pattern.
White with pink and a few grizzly feathers added.

And one more from Saturday's tying session.
This is a tough pattern for me to get just the right placement of the feathers to get the height and have them not roll while doing it.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.
This one below is my last one for this spring as I have enough in the fly box to fish this season.
I think the fly below is the best I've done.

And 1 more for the dark side.

I'm chomping at the bit to get out with the long rod again this spring.

These are great flies Charlie, really like 'The Dark One'. I can see them all working for bass, mackerel, pollock over here & for pike & even salmon in the fresh! Care to show us how it,s done? Jim.

I got one more of the high profile flies tied today, besides a few things on the todo list for this spring.

This maybe be the nicest fly I've tied so far. I don't know if I will fish this fly, or just put it on a stand to just admire. It took alot of work to get every feather to sit just how I wanted, and hate to dunk it in the surf. I would tie in a few feathers and then back to the yard work for a break. Let alone it took me a while to get good photos of it.

That's a beast Charlie!
How about putting it, perched up on a post, in a small glass dome, with an oiled wood base?
That would look amazing & you could view it from all angles..

Jim I might look into that. As of now I just have it on a stand but it will be covered with dust in a few weeks and look like crap.
Maybe a shadow box display. Thanks for the idea

Just appreciating the art, Charlie. Can't work out how you do that.. Get that 'dark-un' under cover too. Worth preserving!
When you feel like it, any time, show us how it's done. A 'How To' (???).
No rush. Maybe next winter? When the weather's foul & there's no fishing. 'Cos I can't work it out & they're great & I want a go at it.

Deal?
