Cape May Reef redux

Post  CaptFrank on 8/4/2012, 10:21 pm

Went out to Cape May Reef today with Andy. We drifted a few wrecks searching for Flounder and Sea Bass. We didn't have to search long. We were into Flounder and Sea Bass from the jump. Final tally was 21 Flounder caught, 7 keepers to 22". 47 Sea Bass, 4 keepers (one was pretty big). 1 Bluefish, 2 Doggies, 1 Skate, and 2 Sea Robins. We snagged a few Bunker on our way out for fresh bait. Tried my huge throw net, but that was nearly impossible with the pitching sea's. Probably should've video'd the attempt, it would've been worth the laugh...
Anyway, we used Bunker, Mackeral, Squid, and Clam for bait, as well as the Blue and Sea Robin. Fresh bait was the ticket for Flounder, Clam for the Sea Bass. Back trolling was the way to go due to the wind, heavy current, and waves. It made all the difference. The other factor was getting away from the crowds and working the structure. It was tough losing people though, there were over 125 boats out there today. And someone always wanted to follow us.
Later in the afternoon the wind came up pretty hard, so we decided to head in. We hit a wreck on Wildwood Reef on our way back. We nailed 2 nice Triggerfish on our first drift, then missed a bunch and lost our rigs. So, we called it a day. Had a blast!

Doing our best to work those fish over Jeff!

Zmat, reports have been fairly dismal, off and on this year, down this end. It's nice when you can get out and do well. We had to work at it, but it paid off.
