A New Pattern

Post  Charlie G. on 7/31/2012, 8:09 pm

I saw this pattern called a "Slab Fly" that guys said they have done real well with so I decided to give it a try. I think it is a good small peanut and spot pattern.

I had to ask the deer hair spinning master Old Man Bob a few questions about getting the hair collars right on flies. I know you can see an improvement as I tied more and got more comfortable with spinning deer hair.

Almost no collar at all on those 2
But after a few more tries

And in various sizes

Damn I hate to post pix of the ties with bad collars but it's a learning curve.

I know even a blind man can see the progression and improvement of my tying this fly.
I went back and looked at how Lou Tabory first tied this fly I believe he invented. I never had the collar
right.
As anyone can see I finally got it after about 4 or 5 tries. Then I started goofing off adding other feathers, and now on my last go at this pattern I used 2 different colors.

I might have said I was done tying this pattern before but I went back and doctored up the first few I wasn't happy with.
With this last tie I'm really done with this pattern.
Practice, Practice, and more Practice Very Happy
