Hey fellas,

My first stop by here, I spend a lot of time in the lure building forum. I've spent most of my time the last number of years strictly musky fishing and walleye trolling in the spring. I am up to speed with the required and good gear. My question is I'm severely lacking in knowledge on a good rod and reel to buy (Christmas gift from wife?) for walleye, bass, pike etc. i plan on doing a lot more of this type of fishing from a kayak this season. I prefer a spinning set up.

The best advise I can give is to decide how much you want to spend on a reel and buy whatever shimano fits that price range, I usually buy a smaller size rather then a larger size, a 1000 is large enough. For rods I like St. Croix, Avid series rods, again I tend to go with the lighter models as opposed to the heavy weights, nothing more then a med. From a kayak I like using shorter rods, nothing over 6 ft. casting from a sitting position is a lot different then standing in a boat. Just my .02
