Fish Hawk 5/26 - 5/30 Report

Post  Fish Hawk on 6/1/2011, 9:32 pm

Weather and life have been getting in the way of our 11 fishing season. Mostly weather - Some of you know weve been fishing off the deck there in fortescue and been doing better then out on the boat. Go figure. We decided to take our spring vaca at the end of may and do some bassin and possibly drum. Forget the fluke, unless the fluking is going to be like in 09 where even I could get easily get 5 on board then no problem. Started out on the water in the afternoon on thrusday 5/26 the plan was to goto the delaware side and chunk for bass. The wind was blowing steady out of the south east at 15kts and gusting. Figured that with the incoming tide will have the wind with the tide and it would be fishable. Got setup in north part of blakes and started to chunk the rest of the outgoing tide. It was rough to say the least. After a hour or so of being thrown around and no signs of life, decided to make a run back over to Nj side and fish shipjohn light. Had a exciting ride back over with a following sea and 4 footers throwing us all over the place. Made it to the light and anchored up in somewhat calmer water. As I said the tide was starting to come in and we had the wind with us now instead of against. Had small taps and pecks at the bait but nothing was committing. As the tide started to push we got our first fish. Some where in the mid 20"s and fiesty. After picking through a few more shorts we got our first keeper. 29" on a head. The next was a 30" and of course riss bags a 31 1/2 and the previous. All fish were caught on chunks and heads. Total fish was 8, boated 6. Kept 3, other 3 were throwbacks, and broke two off(power pro issues) Back to the dock for a fresh striper dinner!

Friday we started out alittle north of were we where the day previous. Someone was fishing the structure exactly where we wanted to so made a move north a bit to where a buddy did really well on some big fish earlier in the season. Anchored up with the outgoing and chunked. Had some small taps and pecks and one small run but nothing to connect with. Fishined the outgoing and made a move south to the light for the incoming. Thinking we could make a repeat of the day previous. well the wind didnt allow it to happen. Even though it was with the tide we couldnt hold. Caught two throwbacks and called it a day. They were in the mid 20"s and once again they were on heads.

Saturday we stayed inside all day. We got sunburnt really bad and couldnt really move let alone be outside and fish. lol! so just sat around and enjoyed a day off so to speak Very Happy

Sunday got up early had 18 shedders on reserve and wanted to try the drum. Had a freind from the marina on board with his gf a newbie to the whole satlwater world. Left early morning to catch the outgoing tide and headed to a favorite drum spot of ours. The tide wasnt quite right so had to wait a bit untill it started moving out. Once it did we anchored up and began to bail some really nice tog. 5-6 lbers. Problem was they arnt in season yet here in nj Embarassed Riss did hook up with what we thought was a drum but it came undone beside the boat and before we could see it. We also had some bunker on board but it was less than mediocore. Finished the day with a hand full of tog but nothing for the table. Matt and Taylor had a great time with the whitechins and cant wait to get back on them when they are in season.

Monday the plan was to go out later in the day/evening and try again for drum but fish the incoming tide. Left the house around 1 and went out to a super hot bay. No wind, just heat. Brought a pint of minnows and tub of squid for shits and giggles to try our luck with fluke- what a waste of time. The heat was soooo bad we made a 14 mile run south towards the end of the bay to check out a wreck called the lil mohawk. did this to kill time for the incoming and to cool off. Bout hour or so later made a way back up to drum grounds and anchored up for the incoming. It wasnt long before the drum started to chew. Ended up boating 3 and missed one on the hook set. Nothing huge - two @26 one at 24"- Ding Ding theres dinner!Back to the dock just before sunset. Would of stayed but didnt want to clean fish in the dark.

All in all we had a super good time. Jack saw his first drum fish - which boomed at him. Also his first turtle which bit his nose(no worries hes a lab lol! )
