When you think about it, most fish share a very basic theme. A light colored belly, silver or gold sides, and a darker shaded top. Many variables after those basic features define the individual specie, such as lines, stripes, dots and definite color patterns. Heres how I do the basic fish and the results from these variations. I start after priming by shooting white, followed by a medium gray on the back down only 1/3 the side. In these examples all were then covered with netting and silver then applied to the back and sides. Note how the background behind the scale on top is dark, then fades to light on the bottom, a real natural feel. The next step is the shading down the back and around the eyes, this step really adds some life to the basic fish form. At this point it could represent a lot of baitfish like chubs & shiners, but lets continue. I use pearls and candies now to define the color and maintain that basic fish pattern.
Herring - Teal blue pearl down the center of the back, candy cobalt blue over that then just down the side. Add a little candy red under that and a shot on the tail.
Striper - Olive green down the back, a little gold on the gill and head area. Some black horizontal lines on side and back.
Brown Trout - Olive green on the back and head, yellow on side of belly and gill area, candy red in the middle of the side. Some dirty white dots, fill top ones with some black, bottom with a red/orange mix.
As you can see, the addition of various colors and patterns has taken these "basic fish" patterns into very specific specie representations. Don't be afraid to go abstract with your candy color choices as your basic pattern will identify it as a fish, either fresh, salt or tropical.
